Saturday Afternoon
Wow, it's cold and raw out. It's still 37, but the wind chill has dropped a degree to 25. Did see a few grains of snow but it's hard to tell if it's really going to do anything.

Anyway, here's a very cool story about the early days of film, and a lost city buried beneath the California dunes. Heh.

Tired.
Husband and I went shopping, and I bought lots of things for my crafty experiment. We also bought new planters for the veggies we want to plant, and we bought water filters and soil and stuff like that.

And, as usual, I am absolutely wiped out. What the hell is it about shopping that completely exhausts me? I have no problem walking places, and doing things, and hauling heavy stuff around, and even going up a flight of stairs, but shopping kills me ded.

I think it's the mental focus required. I scan all of the products in each aisle, looking not only for things on my list, but for things not on the list that I might need. And by the end, I'm so tired I could crawl in the cart and fall asleep. I yawned eleventy billion times on the way home. My brain gets completely absorbed in the looking and scanning--both the primary brain and the secondary--and I think it takes more energy.

I know, I know, first world problem. Still, it's weird. If I lie down at this moment I'll fall asleep.

your taste in my mouth
I started reading Paul Tremblay's The Little Sleep on my train ride this afternoon, even though I only got about four hours of sleep last night and had planned to nap. OMG SO GOOD. The prose is fantastic and I really like the narrator, Mark Genevich, a PI who has narcolepsy. He's a fantastically unreliable narrator, because even he can't trust his perceptions - he falls asleep mid-conversation, loses time, and has hypnogogic hallucinations, so he can't always tell what's real and what was just some sort of half-waking dream. I'm in the middle somewhere and if it the second half is as good as the first half has been, I might have a new book to add to my favorites list. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but it's hard, because so far, it really is amazing.

Why did I only get four hours of sleep last night (or four whores, as originally typed, which I think would be explanation enough)? Because I decided to make hot cross buns last night at about 10 pm. Stress baking, late baking, a gift to bring to my parents' house for dinner today - all of the above, probably.

hot cross buns! ) even though I'm not a huge hot cross bun fan (my parents are, which is why I made them), they tasted good when we finally cut into them. So, yet another baking triumph. They weren't hard to make, but the two rises did make the process fairly lengthy for a late night project.

I see LJ still hasn't fixed whatever's wrong with scrapbook, so hopefully these pictures post as they preview. Stupid technology.

I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to do a grain pie for Easter this year, since I'm the only person who likes it, apparently.

PATIENT - Chapter 15: Done His Worst
Title: Patient
Author: zeppomarx
Characters: House, Wilson, Cuddy, plus the characters created for Priority’s Exigencies and zeppomarx’s A Gentle Knock at the Door.
Summary: House’s minions find a new patient, one who is reluctant to allow House to treat him. Begins three months after the opening scene of A Gentle Knock at the Door. Part of the Contract universe, which includes DIY Sheep’s intense and angsty The Contract, and Priority’s sequel Exigencies.
Thanks: To priority and houserocket7 for encouraging me to writing this side story to A Gentle Knock on the Door, and for their faithful diligence in copy editing my sloppy prose.
Warnings, etc.: Generally safe, but references to torture, rape and major character death that has happened in the past. Some chapters are pretty angsty.
Disclaimers: You know the drill. Don’t own `em, never did, never will. Wish I did.
This Chapter: Five minutes later, two EMTs—a man and a woman—parted the gathering crowd of neighbors and gawkers, pushing a gurney rapidly toward the blood-covered figure lying partially clothed on the sidewalk.

Showered and clean! Now to spend the rest of my day: drawing, playing Pokemon, and watching the Ranger game mmhmmm <3

Also. I heard it's supposed to snow.

Again.

WAT. WHERE IS MY SPRING DAMN IT ALL.

I need to get/make a baseball/Texas Rangers icon since the seasons about to start. Expect to hear lots about it though I'm sure the majority of you don't watch baseball lol but I LOVE IT. SO EXCITED FOR THE REAL SEASON TO BEGIN.

It's still spring training now, they're just showing some of the games on tv. I get to go to an exhibition match on April 2nd though c8 JOY OF JOYS. I may see Clash of the Titans that day too. Oh what a glorious time that would be~

And the drawing part: I outlines the rest of my current chapter of my comic C: and sketched a page this morning. I wanna watch a movie tonight, but my other plan if I don't do that is to ink at LEAST two pages, or more. See what I can get done.

Saturday
Well, there's a weather change. Front rolled through sometime early this morning and it rained for a little while. Now it's grey and damp and cold -- 37 degrees (2.7 C) with a wind chill of 26. Chango is hiding in the bedroom. Did not go to the post office or store yesterday so will have to make a quick run today.

More later, probably.

Welcome to Ebonlock's Fanfic Theater, first up a scene from the Stargate: Atlantis fic "Match Game" by [info]ebonlock and [info]moonlightnrain -

Ignore the fact that Rodney has glasses, the options are a little slim just now. But I think I nailed John. Also really wishing you could have characters actually move around the screen, or better yet storm off in a huff.

this is the coolest acid dream. i would love to be able to get all my friends together like this. or not even friends. just anyone. like "oh, you can do stuff? awesome, will you do stuff with me? we don't gotta talk."

what's hilarious is how many people they needed to play each part, since mike played every part himself on the original album. i wonder how many times he switches guitars (mike's the guy in the groovy rainbow tank btw).

ok i'm done.

Chicago always does this.

All week it's been gorgeous, so I've been slowly packing up winter stuff and putting it away, taking one of the THREE BLANKETS off my bed, finding my summer clothes and shoes, and leaving windows open at night.

Today, it's snowing.

Daily Happiness
1. So...my current laptop has been dying in stages for a while, but last night was the last straw. The screen is going. It's all filled up with white horizontal lines (usable, but who knows for how much longer).

I had been planning on getting a netbook for my birthday anyway, because I find even the 15" laptop kind of a pain to lug around (nice for just using in the other room, etc, but heavy for taking places), so I thought, well, if I'm getting a netbook, then no need for my new computer to be a laptop.

So we borrowed my grandparents' car and went to Fry's and looked around. After looking at the desktops and not being super thrilled with any of them, I thought, well, maybe a laptop after all, but I didn't really see a lot that excited me there, either, and the one I sort of wanted was $650, which was more than I really wanted to pay. So after much wibbling, I ended up going with a nice compact desktop that was $450 and a 20" full HD monitor that was on sale for $110.

The PC is a Gateway. Windows 7, Core 2 Quad, 4 GB RAM, 640 GB hard drive. And it has 9 USB ports! So I'm pretty pleased with that. The specs on the laptop would have, of course, been much worse, for almost $100 more than the desktop and laptop combined.

And then since I wanted my portability now rather than end of June when it's my birthday, I decided to get the netbook yesterday, too. (But am still being good and counting it as a birthday present.)

The netbook is a Toshiba. It's got XP, 160 GB hard drive, and 1 GB RAM (I was ready to get the one that's a step up, Windows 7 and 250 GB for $50 more, but they were sold out). The best thing about it is 11 hours of battery life, which means when I take it places, I really don't have to take the cord with me most of the time, unless I plan to be away for a long time.

Everything I have fits easily on my 320 GB external drive, so the internal desktop drive will be more than enough storage. With the netbook, I'll just do as I do with my current laptop and only put things I'm interested in reading/watching in the near future on it (a season or two of a TV show, a few movies, a few manga series), and keep the bulk on my desktop and external drive (which is a tiny drive and very portable itself, so I could take it along with the netbook if I wanted to).

It's going to be odd having to think about using two computers and moving files between them. The last time I regularly used a computer other than my own was um...eleven years ago? when I was still at UCLA, and for that I used floppies if I wanted to work on stuff in the computer labs or at work (where we were highly discouraged from doing anything but actual work on the computers, even if there was no work to be done). So I'll have to look into my options. [personal profile] helens78 recommended Live Mesh, but I haven't really checked it out yet.

I also haven't set up the computers yet and am still working from my old laptop, white lines and all. I knew it was going to take a lot of time (I am very, very picky about how my computer is organised, and it take a lot of work to get it from out-of-the-box to that point) and had other stuff I wanted to get done first. I did set up the netbook a little. Got all the cruft uninstalled at least, and got Firefox and Avast on there. No other programs installed yet, and I haven't begun to organise the start menu to my satisfaction or transferred my files, but it is at least looking slightly more welcoming. The desktop and monitor aren't even out of the box.

2. We couldn't go to Fry's and not go to Book Off(s) while we were down there. :) Carla got several new CDs in the $3 section and I found one vol. of manga I needed, plus...volume one of Ekiben Hitoritabi! Which I have been looking for since I saw [personal profile] telophase's post about it two years ago. I had prety much given up looking for quite a while, but yesterday I thought I'd give it a try again and what do you know, Book Off actually had a copy! It was $5, but that's still quite a good discount for large-format manga, which is usually $8-9 new. I'm looking forward to reading it. :)

3. When Carla went over to my grandparents' to get the car, they gave her a photo they'd found somewhere of me and my mom and dad in 1988. My mom and I are wearing matching flannel shirts. XD I don't really remember that particular one, but I was big into flannel for several years there. This is the flannel shirt I wore pretty much non-stop for all of fifth grade. Anyway, take a look at my mom's hair in that picture. Her hair is naturally stick straight and very thin and baby fine. It has zero volume. So to get it like in that picture, she used to have to get a perm, plus use curlers on top of that.

Anyway, I am surprised that picture is from '88. Actually, I think maybe it's not. Might be '87 or even '86. I didn't have bangs in 7th grade, and I could have sworn the sporadic visits from my dad had become non-existent by that time, too. *rummages* Hmm, yeah. I do have bangs in my 7th grade school photo, but my hair is a lot longer and I just generally look more mature. Here's my 6th grade photo, which looks a lot closer, so yeah, I'm going with '87 after all (maybe the film was developed in January '88).

Aha! Solved the dilemma! It's handwritten '88 on the back of the photo, but looking at the printed date on it, it's just a squishy six, so it was actually '86. That makes much more sense.

4. I am nearly over my cold! After just three days! Awesome! On the downside, my ear is stuffed up again. It was clear for one blessed day before the cold came on. *sigh*

Advice on Portfolios
Last night I was making notes on some drawings in a friend's portfolio and it got me thinking about the whole animation job hunt game, which (praise be to mighty Om) I haven't had to play for a couple years. I realised my experience with it might be useful to people just starting out, especially as I was officemate with the assistant HR person (i.e. the one who actually dealt with portfolios) for a while at the TV studio where I worked. So, for the benefit (or at least momentary distraction) of humanity, here are my Portfolio Tips for Hopeful Animation Professionals! )

There! I hope that's helpful. If anyone has anything to add, please feel free to comment and I will add it to the list.

Snape/Harry - "When Cars Fly", by [info]themadscriptor
Title: When Cars Fly
Gaining Access: OPEN
Author: [info]themadscriptor
Length/Word Count: ~7900
Alternate Links to Fic/Art: None of which I am aware.
Pairing: Severus/Harry
Rating: NC-17
Author's Website: The author has left fandom.
Why everyone should read this: Author's summary: P-n-W Flying Motor Works relies on Slug and Jiggers for certain vehicular potions—after all, that Muggle oil is rubbish, really. (Don't even get Harry started on the antifreeze.) When Jiggers goes on sabbatical, Harry learns that Snape isn't dead, knows a bit of Italian, and gives a really good blow-job.

I remember very clearly when this fic first posted: I was blown away by [info]themadscriptor's clever and creative use of both magic and canon.

Rage for Others
My little brother Jordeaux has just come out as trans on his facebook. Everyone's leaving him supportive messages and things like that. Then he gets a message from this *I must not use foul language* person that he knows. And I see red.

Don't punch the screen; it did nothing )

Dear "Elle"
You. COWARD. You enormous, gargantuan Brobdingnagian coward not having the guts to post your little message on Facebook. If she really wanted to "stand up for Jesus" she'd post it on facebook and not be afraid. If she thinks she's right, she'll have no problem saying it in public. But no- she's a coward. And I have no respect for cowards. (And also, Dear "Elle", I would spit, but that would be a waste of perfectly good saliva)

And I'm feeling a lot of T-rage right now. I can put up with a lot, but when something like this happens to another person, especially one of my brothers...

EDIT: Oh, and she's responded again!
Wah Wah Wah )

Thinking is hard! I don't like change! Boo hoo. How does this iPod work? It's new, it must be the devil.

I'm hulking out here, fellas. Can I get a rage-rage?
